Mac-centric criticism
Is it the pc's fault that it can't read a file made on a mac?

well, yes, in fact, it is the pc's fault. oddly, macs can read files created on pcs, plus macs have been using open-source operating systems for about seven years now, so microsoft has had every opportunity to allow windows users to read mac files.

What I find interesting about this seemingly simple question is that the answer given tells whether you are a mac or a pc person. Mac people blame the pc, and vice-versa.
Here's my take on it. When creating a program these days on either a pc or a mac it is wise to allow the user to save in a format that will be universally readable, even if that format isn't the default or best it's good to have it as an option.
This question came from a problem with a file saved out of text edit (I think that's the name of the program). The problem is that once you use images in the document you create with text edit you are only allowed to save in a format that is mac-proprietary. And then there's no way to read it on a pc, because, unfortunately, the format is closed-source.
OS X may have been built from FreeBSD and the Mach Kernel, open source projects, but once they became OS X they became proprietary and closed.
